Ingredients for the perfect party: 1 great cause, 350 attendees and a night of dinner with friends. That was the recipe for the Boxers and Bras Pre-Party.The event, held June 17 at Minervas, was the precursor to Boxers and Bras for a Cause, set for Oct. 21 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Sioux City Convention Center. The event raised more than $1,000 for the Nylen Cancer Center, and brought together friends to break bread in support of a good cause. The evening worked liked this: Cancer Center supporters enjoyed dinner together at Minervas. There were no invitations – just show up and eat. Cancer-fighting foods and a signature martini priced at $20 were part of the night’s menu. Ten percent of all meal proceeds, and all proceeds from the signature martini, were donated to the Cancer Center.Virginia Anderson, Boxers and Bras event chair, spent much of her night chatting with event attendees and promoting the fall event.“Tonight we have local celebrities promoting Boxers and Bras,” Anderson said. Behind her, three pairs of local celebrities were charged with crafting original designs for the undergarments. “They then go on display Oct. 21 at the Boxers and Bras event - with hopefully 100-150 boxers and bras that will be on display that night.”A few seats away, four girlfriends spent much of the night laughing and sipping drinks. A boxers and bras coloring contest kept others busy.Nylen Cancer Center’s Tracy Shook said the event attracted around 350 people. “What an amazing evening – it was so nice to see friends of the cancer center, enjoy great food and listen to the music of the Coal Miners.”“The best part of this event is it creates awareness of important screenings,” said Cancer Center Executive Director Karen Van De Steeg. “Plus it’s fun to see everyday clothing transformed into something interesting.”PLAN TO ATTENDWhat: Boxers and Bras for a CauseWhen: Oct. 21, 2010, 5:30-7:30 p.m.Where: Sioux City Convention CenterCost: $25Contact: Tracy Shook, 252-9426 or shookt@jencc.comThis story appears in our Summer 2010 newsletter.
