Scheels Supports Race for Hope

The Sioux City Scheels store has donated $6,000 to the June E. Nylen Cancer Center to fund the fitness program for cancer survivors. “Scheels likes to give back to programs where the funds stay here,” said assistant store leader, Glen Coble. “This program is one that we feel makes a difference in the lives of people in our area.”The donation will be used to fund the personalized fitness program for cancer survivors which the cancer center developed two years ago in partnership with the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA. The program is one that is targeted for funding from the Race for Hope event being held September 15. Proceeds from the annual Race for Hope have funded this program since its inception. The money will enroll at least 75 cancer survivors in the next year.“Hundreds of studies have proven that exercise and healthy eating can lower cancer recurrence rates, improve survival rates and help with fatigue which is the number one side effect of cancer treatment,” said Cindy Gates, certified cancer exercise training specialist. The fitness program involves health and wellness coaching for cancer patients to support their physical and medical needs. The program is eight weeks long and covers personalized exercise training and educational components of nutrition and exercise. Classes are offered 4-6 times throughout the year. Cancer survivors who have participated in the program make claims that exercise has helped them feel normal again; that it was nice to focus on wellness instead of illness and that it was just the nudge they needed to get them on the track towards a healthier outlook on life. Over a hundred cancer survivors have participated in the YMCA fitness program. This year’s signature fundraiser is Saturday, September 15 at Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve; registration begins at 7:00 a.m. Participants can walk or run and compete for awards. Events include a 5K, 15K and a 1K for kids. In the 1K kids division, children can compete for a traveling school trophy. The band November 35th will provide the entertainment and food will be provided by Chili’s.Scheels has supported the cancer center and the Race for Hope for the past two years.
