Cancer Center Volunteer Retires after 10 years of Helping OthersRon Strom, Prostate Cancer Support Group Facilitator at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center, is retiring from his volunteer position that he has held for ten years.Strom has been the facilitator of the Prostate Cancer Support Group for ten years, completing his own cancer treatment in March 2001. As the facilitator, Strom has conducted monthly meetings, encouraged hundreds of men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and has provided endless hours of support to help men realize there is hope when faced with prostate cancer.“Ron has been a facilitator for the past ten years (only missing two meetings in ten years) and we wish to extend a sincere thank you for all that he has done for our patients,” said Mary Jane Fitch, Resource Room Coordinator. “We could not have done this without him and we are incredibly grateful for all of his help!”The Prostate Cancer Support Group meets at 5:15 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at the Cancer Center. The purpose of the group is to provide information about diagnosis and treatment options for prostate cancer along with providing interesting topics for discussion.“I consider every man I have met and those who have joined our group to be a friend,” said Strom. “Many men are surprised to find us laughing and joking, seeing the fear leave their faces and to realize they are going to live is a great feeling and that is why I have stayed so long.”The June E. Nylen Cancer Center hosts educational programs, preventative screenings and several support groups to help those facing all types of cancer.
