March 27 Is 25th Anniversary of June E. Nylen Cancer Center

For 25 years the June E. Nylen Cancer Center (JENCC) has led the region in comprehensive cancer care. The years have been marked by collaboration, change, and growth. Now as we mark the anniversary of our inception as one of the first freestanding cancer centers in the Midwest, we have much to be thankful for.

“We have been privileged to provide the highest quality, compassionate care through prevention, treatment and research right here in Siouxland for 25 years,” says Krista McCullough, Executive Director of JENCC. “It could not have happened without incredible collaboration between cancer specialists and area health providers.”

Our center officially opened its doors March 27, 1995 as Siouxland Regional Cancer Center. The project was several years in development and was a result of partnerships between MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's, Siouxland Hematology Oncology Associates, McNealy Radiation Oncology, and Washburn Radiology Oncology Services. Many of the services scattered across the city would then be housed in one comfortable location.

One of the great changes in our history came in 2005 with the changing of our namesake to the June E. Nylen Cancer Center. The change wasn’t in name only, as it ushered in a new era in cancer care for the region. A generous gift from Mark Nylen in honor of his mother allowed us to aggressively pursue new technology.

Each day about 125 patients come to our center for hope and healing. Altogether, 8 providers and a staff of more than 100 professionals work together to not just treat cancer, but to treat each person who comes to JENCC and at the several medical oncology and hematology satellite locations in Iowa that are convenient for patients in outlying areas. Through coordinated teamwork, the JENCC team personalizes the care of patients and treats everyone with dignity to ensure the best experience possible.

“While we celebrate the past 25 years, we are pursuing safety and excellence in order to continue to improve outcomes for our patients by creating an environment which supports collaboration, mutual trust and authentic communication,” says McCullough. “We look forward to being persistent in acting with purpose, focusing on results and building strong relationships with our referring physicians. We will continue to work hard to be Siouxland’s preferred choice for hope and healing.”
