Pink Ribbon Golf Classic - Let’s Par Tee for a Cure on September 10

The 22nd annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be held on Friday, September 10 at the Green Valley Golf Course in Sioux City. The event usually sells out, so secure your sponsorship and team quickly. This year’s theme is “Let’s Par Tee for a Cure” and proceeds raised will go towards the purchase of a new PET scanner at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center. Positron emission tomography (PET) is an important tool in the diagnosis and staging of cancer, including re-staging the disease throughout treatment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.7 million new cases of cancer were expected in 2019. Their United States Cancer Statistics published in June 2020 state the overall incidence rate of 438 per 100,000 people is driven by prostate, lung, and colorectal cancer in men; and breast, lung, and colorectal cancer in women. Clearly, the need for timely, accurate diagnosis, and staging exists, as well as monitoring the spread of disease and success of treatment. PET scan technology plays a vital role in this. Our current PET scanner is 11 years old and reaches it end-of-life in December 2022.

The use of PET in cancer staging has improved the staging of the disease which leads to optimal treatment management for patients. PET scans are also propelling innovations in new tracers, treatments such
as immunotherapies, and emerging combination protocols. The new PET scanner will fulfill the demand for increased quality, safety, efficiency, and patient comfort. The total investment for this state-of-the-art technology is $2.2 million.

We greatly appreciate the support of the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic, its sponsors, golfers, and supporters. More than a half of million dollars has been raised over the 20+ years of the golf tournament to benefit various programs and services at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
