Race is Still on Despite Flooding
The 15th annual Race for Hope is still on despite the flooding. Over 1,000 walkers, runners and supporters of the June E. Nylen Cancer Center are expected to join in the festivities Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve. The event will still start and end at the Visitor’s Center; the Kid’s Fun Run and the 5K will utilize part of the Preserve trails, the 15K will utilize the roadways of McCook Lake.“We realize the flooding has impacted many families in our community, but cancer does not take a break for flooding and neither will we. In order to continue purchasing items and funding programs that directly benefit cancer patients and their families, we decided the event will go on,” says Jean Gill race director. The Race for Hope honors and celebrates cancer survivorship, in addition to giving the community an event to run – walk – visit – laugh – eat – connect. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to June E. Nylen Cancer Center to benefit Siouxland cancer patients and their families. This year will also celebrate 15 years of this event and has something for everyone, including kid’s activities, a chance to honor and remember those touched by cancer, visit with health and wellness vendors, prizes, and opportunity to connect with friends, and support a great cause. A majority of participants walk in the 5K and15K. Kids can enter a 1K fun run for $10 that starts at 8:30 a.m. with all children receiving a shirt and special commemorative award for participating. Kid’s activities are planned from 9 – 11 a.m. and include crafts, games and educational opportunities. All pre-registered participants receive either a cotton or dry-fit long sleeved shirt if registered by August 19. Registration is $22 per person, plus an additional $10 for a dry-fit shirt. After August 19, the entry fee is $35 with no guarantee of a shirt. Again this year, cancer survivors may choose a yellow shirt as a tribute to their cancer survivorship. To register for the race, visit www.nylencancercenter.com, or call Jean Gill, event organizer, at (402) 638-2301 or the Cancer Center (712) 252-0088.
