Sunscreen for Siouxland
June E. Nylen Cancer Center cares about the Siouxland community and that’s why we started a project to help prevent skin cancer in our community by offering free sunscreen dispensers
Why did we start this project?
According to American Cancer Society, melanoma was the top 5 cancer diagnosis in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota in 2019.
1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70.
Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma.
You can reduce your risk of skin cancer by following the best practice sun safety tips – limiting exposure is the first line of defense, but if you cannot do that, wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen are key.
Less than 1/3 of the population currently uses sunscreen.
We didn’t like the sound of these facts, so we took action. The idea came from our Community Ambassadors Committee and the goal was simple - help our community protect their skin to prevent sunburns and possible future skin cancer. Our employees donated funds to purchase several sunscreen dispensers that give out sunscreen for FREE. This summer we are piloting the program, but COVID-19 did impact the original plan to test at splash pads and pools.
Golf courses have been seeing an all-time high in golfers, so we decided to put sunscreen dispensers at Green Valley Golf Course, the Dakota Dunes Country Club, and the Sioux City Country Club. Later pools were given the okay to open back up, and we also placed a dispenser at one of the Sioux City pools as well.
This is just an initial pilot of this project; we want to expand and make an even larger impact next summer. Donations are welcome to help us with the expansion - just designate your gift to this project.
Finally, don’t forget to use your sunscreen and join the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in taking action to prevent skin cancer in Siouxland!
