The Why Behind Commercial Chaos for a Cure on July 23 – Ensuring Continued Hope and Healing for Patients

Paul Schelling, a Sioux Center native, thought it was nothing when he had a swollen throat and felt a lump on the left side of his throat. Then the 22-year-old blacked out while delivering a load of hogs so scheduled an appointment to see both his local primary care physician and then an ENT specialist. A biopsy was done on the lump and the results came back as cancerous, so Paul was referred to the June E. Nylen Center where he had a PET scan and then met with his Medical Oncologist, Dr. Donald Wender, in June 2013. It was determined Paul had Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer. Dr. Wender reassured Paul and his wife, Stephanie, that it was very treatable.

Paul started chemotherapy and came to Sioux City every 2 weeks for it. He responded so well to his chemotherapy plan, he did not need any radiation therapy. Paul had his last chemo treatment in January 2014. He remembers he was so excited to be able to eat normal food again after treatment.

“My care at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center was top-notch.  I had Dr. Wender and wonderful nurses in my corner. I felt really well taken care of and was treated like an individual, not just a patient chart,” says Paul.

Today Paul owns and operates a repair shop in Orange City called Overbuilt, LLC. He and Stephanie have 4 children: Josie age 9, Braylee age 7, Kace age 5, and Cambry age 4. And they are busy with final planning details of the 9th annual Commercial Chaos for a Cure which is on July 23. Paul and Stephanie founded Commercial Chaos for a Cure in 2014 along with family and friends to help raise awareness about cancer and help raise funds for the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.

Commercial Chaos has raised $140,000 over the years to benefit various programs, services, and state-of-the-art equipment at the Cancer Center. This year’s proceeds will go towards the purchase of a new cutting-edge PET scanner. Positron emission tomography (PET) is an important tool in the diagnosis and staging of cancer, including re-staging throughout treatment. The June E. Nylen Cancer Center has the only permanent PET scanner in the 75-mile area and the new scanner will have enhanced image quality, increased speed meaning less radiation, as well as improved patient comfort due to a wider gantry opening and shorter tunnel length. It is a $2.4 million project and is expected to be installed in January 2023.

Paul knows firsthand how important the June E. Nylen Cancer Center is to provide advanced and comprehensive cancer care to this region. Commercial Chaos for a Cure is his way to help ensure continued hope and healing close to home for thousands of patients each year.  So come out and enjoy a day packed with great events - all to support an important cause.

Proceeds of this year’s Commercial Chaos for a Cure on July 23 will go towards helping purchase a new state-of-the-art PET scanner that is being replaced at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in January 2023. It is a $2.4 million project and the new scanner will have:

Enhanced Image Quality. This new PET scanner is the most advanced on the market and is specific for oncology. It integrates a high-performance PET and 64-slice CT into one machine and shows the highest possible resolution for each organ. Accurate staging of cancer requires early detection of even small lesions.

Increased Speed & Less Radiation. An entire body scan would take 25-30 minutes on the previous PET but with the new scanner this will be reduced to 5-7 minutes. Radiation doses will be cut in about half for most scans and still result in enhanced image quality.

More Patient Comfort and Comprehensive Integration. A large gantry opening, continuous patient port, and short tunnel length provides ease for positioning of patients and minimizes claustrophobia for a more comfortable exam experience. This new machine will work with our cutting-edge radiation treatment planning software and radiation therapy technology.
