185th Air Refueling Wing and US Bank Support Race for Hope
The fourteenth annual June E. Nylen Cancer Center’s Race for Hope will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve in McCook Lake, SD at 8:30 a.m., registration begins at 7:30 a.m.For the first time, the Cancer Center has chosen a group – the 185th Air Refueling Wing – to lead the race. “The 185th Air Refueling Wing considers it to be a great honor to be selected as this year’s ambassadors,” said Marty Hogan, 185th spokesman. Hogan continues, “Cancer has touched a great majority of us all and the 185th membership is no different. Many of our family, friends, and co-workers have been affected. This year the 185th is challenging our members to run as a team, as an individual and to keep in mind that we are running for a cause larger than any one of us.”In the spirit of giving and competition, U.S. Bank has agreed to contribute an additional $10 to its sponsorship for every active member of the 185th Air Refueling Wing who participates. Premier sponsors include U.S. Bank; KCAU Channel 9; KG95/Z-98 Clear Channel Radio; Sioux City Journal; Chilis; Avery Outdoor; Chesterman’s, Scheels, Bank of America and Pacific City Graphics.All proceeds from this race stay in Sioux City benefitting patients at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center. The money raised this year will support patient services by purchasing new chemotherapy treatment chairs; establishing a partnership with the Siouxland YMCA to develop a fitness program for cancer patients; establishing a support group for kids whose loved ones have cancer and funding lobby enhancements.“This event has continued to grow over the last 13 years and we hope to reach our goal of 1000 participants,” said Jean Gill, race director. “We are grateful to the 185th Air Refueling Wing for their participation and to our sponsors which help make this race possible.”All registered participants receive a race long-sleeved t-shirt, post-race food and chances to win door prizes. The course is set on the beautiful trails of the Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve and features a 5K or 15K run or walk, and a kids’ 1 mile fun run. There is individual and team competition as well as a leisurely walking-for-fun entry.The race for hope honors and celebrates health and cancer survivorship, in addition to giving the community an event to remember those who have passed on after giving inspiration to others and living valiantly and triumphantly with cancer.Pre-registration is encouraged by visiting www.nylencancercenter.com. The fee to participate is $25/$30 for adults and $5 for kids under age 10 before August 30. After August 30, the fee is $35 for adults and there is no guarantee of a shirt.
