Kesem at University of Iowa Offering Support for Children Coping with a Parent with Cancer

There are 5 million children are coping with a parent's cancer diagnosis. That’s 5 million children at risk of experiencing increased anxiety, emotional isolation, loss of social interest, and/or feelings of hopelessness. And that’s why Kesem is committed to creating a world where every child who has a parent with a cancer diagnosis or has lost a parent to cancer is never alone. They support these children through and beyond their parent’s cancer with free, fun-filled creative programs and a lasting community.

Kesem recruits diverse student leader volunteers from college campuses across the country to lead local Kesem chapters. With oversight and guidance from Kesem, these talented and committed leaders work year-round to deliver programming and services, including Camp Kesem, tailored to the needs of children affected by a parent’s cancer in their community.

University of Iowa is one of over 100 active Camp Kesem chapters throughout the United States, and the program is staffed by student volunteers from University of Iowa along with nurses, mental health professionals, and a representative from the national organization. As a national organization, Camp Kesem has over 20 years of experience bringing top quality programs that have a significant impact on children and families. The programs are designed to allow children the opportunity to find support, have fun, and feel safe, loved, and respected. They strive to deliver a transformative and inclusive experience to all families, and provide support with things like transportation, supplies for camp, and translation/interpreters.

Kesem at University of Iowa will offer its seventh annual camp on June 5 - 10, 2022 at the Des Moines Y Camp in Boone, Iowa. It’s open to 60 campers from throughout the area and there are still some openings. The camp is offered free of charge and is open to any 6–18-year-olds who has, or has had, a parent or primary caregiver with cancer. There are other free programs throughout the year for both the children and the adults, and it is a great way to connect with other families impacted by cancer.

Kesem at University of Iowa is gearing up for Summer 2022 and they would love to bring Camp Kesem to families in the Siouxland area.
