Nylen Cancer Center Seeks Honorary Youth Race Ambassador
The June E. Nylen Cancer Center is seeking nominations for the 2012 Race for Hope Honorary Youth Race Ambassador. The 16th Annual Race for Hope will be held Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve. The Honorary Youth Ambassador provides inspiration and motivation for young people to become involved in the Race for Hope, as well as for participants, volunteers, and sponsors.Students in grades 3 – 8 are encouraged to write a 500 word essay on how cancer has touched his or her life and why they would make a good youth ambassador for the Race for Hope. The deadline to enter an essay is May 1; the winner will be contacted by May 15. A community group of individuals will judge the entries.The Honorary Youth Race Ambassador serves as a representative of the June E. Nylen Cancer Center and he or she will work closely with the chairperson to encourage youth to become involved in the race, serve on the planning committee, help coordinate the youth activities and make public appearances to promote the Race."Sam McGowan served as the first Honorary Youth Ambassador in 2011 and did a fantastic job of involving more young people,” says Pat Hubbard, director of fund development. “Sam was instrumental in securing prizes for the youth activities and serving as a spokesperson for the Race for Hope.”Last year’s Race for Hope attracted nearly 700 participants and raised over $44,000, thanks in part to Premier Sponsor U.S. Bank and generous support from the community.
