Race for Hope money helps buy 7 new chemo chairs

Cancer patients are sitting a little prettier now, with the installation in late October of 7 new chemotherapy chairs, which are heated and have wheels. The chairs are the result of our biggest turnout ever at this year’s Race for Hope, which raised more than $52,000 for cancer-related purchases and programs.“As we treat people with chemotherapy, we want them to be comfortable,” says Joni Greder, director of nursing. “Because of the nature of intravenous chemo, many people feel cold during their treatment, and these heated chairs add an extra element of comfort.”In addition to the new seats, the Cancer Center has established a partnership with the Siouxland YMCA to develop a fitness program for cancer patients. The program is aimed at offering personalized fitness and exercise program for cancer survivors through fitness testing, wellness counseling and group classes. The goal is overall wellness for cancer patients and survivors, and is led by Cindy Gates at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center. The class is a joint effort of Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA and Mercy Medical Center. For more information, call Gates at 712-252-9425.Race proceeds also will help the Cancer Center establish a support group for children whose loved ones have cancer and fund lobby enhancements.
